Northern Athletics
Conference announces women's basketball awards Edgewood College's Megan Scheele (New Glarus, Wis.) was named Northern Athletics Conference Player of the Year. Scheele led the Eagles (17-11, 12-6 NAC) to a runner-up finish in the 2008 NAC Women's Basketball Tournament last week, and a fourth place tie in the conference standings. Her 21.8 points per game led the conference in scoring, and is currently fifth best in all of NCAA Division III. She also averaged 11.0 rebounds per game, second best in the NAC, as well as having a 57.6 field goal percentage, third best in the NAC. On the defensive end, the junior forward was also third in steals (2.54 spg) and seventh in blocks (0.96 bpg). Scheele is one of 10 national finalists for the prestigious Jostens Award, and a member of the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women's Basketball Team. Concordia University Chicago's Marche Smith (Oak Park, Ill.) was named the Northern Athletics Conference Rookie of the Year. The freshman guard averaged 14.1 points and 2.2 assists per game, and led the conference with 3.07 steals per game. Smith was also second in the NAC in free throw percentage going 103-for-123 (.837). Concordia University Wisconsin's Stacey Brunner was named Northern Athletics Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Brunner's Falcons won the regular season conference championship for the second straight season, going 17-1 in conference play, and 20-7 overall.
